CHESTER BENNINGTON - Linkin Park frontman with solo-project, Dead By Sunrise

“I was just hanging out with Chester, and got a chance to hear some of his new solo material! In case you haven't heard, he's doing a solo record (he's doing double-duty, working on his album and the LP album simultaneously). The project is called Dead By Sunrise, and the album is being produced by Howard Benson. He played me 9 songs, two of which had (amazing) vocals. I thought I could hear influences from T-Rex to Tears For Fears, but overall it's a pretty punch-you-in-the-gut rock record. Very cool...look for it later this year, probably September-ish. It's going to be incredible!”

When Mike Shinoda posted this statement on his blog in february, a murmur went through the LP following. Then already two years ago, there were sayings about a CHESTER BENNINGTON solo project, which delayed release was caused by Linkin Park's activities. Finally, the day has come:

The debut album “Out of Ashes” of CHESTER BENNINGTON's solo project DEAD BY SUNRISE is going to be released this fall!

On this album, CHESTER is supported by Amir Derakh, Ryan Shuck, Anthony “Fu” Valcic, Brandon Belsky and Elias Andra, who are also known as Julien-K which was partly founded by industrial rock formation Orgy (Amir and Ryan). Already for a few years, CHESTER and Julien-K work together and therefore it was provided that they'd work together for “Out of Ashes” as well.

The songs on “Out of Ashes” already assumed shape before the recording of Linkin Park's double platinum album “Minutes to Midnight”. “I wrote a few songs that I felt were really good but they didn't fit to Linkin Park stylistically,” explains CHESTER. “They were darker and more emotional than everything that I had been doing for Linkin Park until then. So, therefore, I decided to work on those songs instead of turning them into Linkin Park tracks by changing them completely.”

On “Out of Ashes”, which was produced by Howard Benson (Motorhead, My Chemical Romance), Chester doesn't only sing but plays the guitar and keyboard. A few songs were already tested in concert and were received pretty well, even though BENNINGTON warns of the unexpected: “Of course, the album will sound a little bit like Linkin Park but then again very different from it. It's a bit like comparing Soundgarden with Alice in Chains. It's actually impossible to exactly point out what the difference between those two is. But it's easy to hear what band (A/N: of the two mentioned ;) it is. It's the same with 'Out of Ashes' – you can immediately hear that it's not Linkin Park. You can't confound it.”

“There are no hip hop influences on the album, that's the biggest difference [between Linkin Park and Dead By Sunrise],” says BENNINGTON who describes the music he wrote for Dead By Sunrise as darker, sexier and more personal as everything he has ever done before. “Also the harmonious singing and the quantity of vocal-overdubs present my voice in a different way. I was involved into the whole process of making the album, as well as in programming and production which wasn't only a good learning experience but also strengthened me.”

“The album is well and truly me. This is the music I hear in my head, and I'm glad that it finally sees the light of day,” says CHESTER who took all of the creative freedom he needed, which is noticeable in songs like 'Crawl back in', 'Let down' and 'Walking in circles'.

Linkin Park singer starts solo-project Dead By Sunrise

Linkin Park singer starts solo-project Dead By Sunrise

“It feels like something that I had to do, as if I was forced to.”

Berlin (ddp). The singer of US-band Linkin Park, Chester Bennington, is going to release an album with his solo-project Dead By Sunrise in September. The album is called “Out Of Ashes”, told Bennington RBB youth radio “Fritz”.
“It feels like something that I had to do, as if I was forced to.” First, he wanted to start a solo carrier but eventually it became a band over the last years. Linkin Park supported him wholeheartedly.

After Mike Shinoda (Fort Minor), Chester Bennington is the second Linkin Park musician who starts a solo-project. According to Bennington, Linkin Park are working on another record as well. Like he already did “Minutes to Midnight”, Rick Rubin produces again their album. The release is planned for 2010. (mg/ddp)

Take 40's own Andrew G caught up with Chester Bennington of Linkin Park fame last week to find out all about his new side project, 'Dead By Sunrise'.

Chester revealed that he's been able to be more involved in the songwriting process in Dead By Sunrise than in Linkin Park, and that much of the material on their forthcoming debut album Out Of Ashes was inspired by his former struggle with drugs and alcohol.

"There's a lot of different elements of my life that I wrote about on this record that have occurred in the last 4 years," Chester told Andrew G.

"A lot of which were self destructive and negative and heart-breaking in some points, and at the same time I also experienced the greatest love I've ever experienced in my life, getting closer with my family and overcoming the self destructive pattern in my life."

"All of those things are being represented on the record... and so (the band name) Dead By Sunrise is actually... literally from my feeling like I'm not going to make it to tomorrow. Am I gonna overdose tonight? Am I gonna have seizures from alcohol withdrawal? Am I just gonna wanna quit playing music altogether and go be a recluse somewhere?"

"Those are all things that were very real to me at certain times in the last few years, and then at the same time there's times where I was more happy and more clear than I've ever been... so it's a very weird juxtaposition that you feel on the record."

Dead By Sunrise release their first single 'Let Down' shortly and Andrew had the chance to check out the filming of the video clip! See below for a little sneak peek from G's handy-cam!"
